To request records for a minor, follow the process detailed below.

Requesting records for a deceased person

Since a deceased taxpayer cannot sign on their own behalf, the only way to obtain their IRS records is if someone else has signing authority. This may include an estate administrator, executor, or personal representative of the deceased person. A personal representative may include a surviving spouse or adult child.

Requesting records using a Power of Attorney

If the taxpayer is not able to sign for themselves, another person may have Power of Attorney to request their IRS records. If this is the case, follow the process detailed below.

If you would like to use TaxStatus to submit a request for a third party, follow this process:

  1. Enter the person's information (SSN, legal name, phone number, address used on last tax filing) into the TaxStatus system. How to add an individual.

  2. Email [email protected]. Include the person's name, the signer's legal name, and the signer's relationship to the taxpayer. Examples of signer's titles may include:

    • Parent of Minor

    • Adult child of deceased

    • Surviving spouse

    • Power of Attorney

  3. You will be sent a secure link to access the bespoke form.

  4. Follow the instructions to submit a wet-signed form. Does TaxStatus support wet signature?

  5. Upload

    1. The wet-signed form.

    2. A valid government-issued photo ID for the signer.

    3. Supporting Documentation:

      • For a deceased person, this must include the death certificate.

      • This documentation must include proof that you are authorized to manage the person's tax matters.

      • Examples include: Letters of Testamentary (aka Letters of Administration/Representation), Trust Documents, Wills, etc.
